Homosassa, also known as "river of fishes", is located in Citrus County at the intersection of US Hwy 19 and CR 490 approximately 7 miles South of Crystal River. The town's first industrial boom came from the 5,000 acre sugar cane plantation on the Homossassa River in the mid 1800's. Since the early 1900's Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park has been a tourist destination for those seeking to observe the Florida manatee and other wildlife.
